My problem is greeting someone by their name instead of just saying hi. I want to do it because its polite and friendly, but I haven't grown up doing it so it feels weird. Suggestions?

It is difficult when greeting new people especially so I understand what you mean.
Maybe greeting the person in an open way will be more comfortable for example instead of just saying "hi John" and then nothing more you could say "hi John hows it going?" or "hi John how are you?".
Take note of how they greet you too, to give you more of idea what to say.

Start with your best friends, who you are most comfortable with. They should be the easiest to greet that way. It may be tough, but when you are finally used to greeting them that way, move on to more people. Keep this up, moving at whatever pace you are ready for. Eventually, you'll be able to greet anybody by first name.

Rehearse saying it by yourself. And then, choose one friend at a time, starting with the ones you are closest with, and greet them with their first name. If you keep on doing this, you'll get used to using their names when you greet them. :)

It makes a huge difference when you call greet your friends by their name. Can't you tell the difference when somebody says "hi" as opposed to "Hi Jimmy" Do it

Just continue to say "hi" but add on the persons name..."Hi John" and so on, soon it will come naturally .....and i agree with you, it is nice to greet someone by their first name !!

I have the same problem. I think it results from a lack of self-confidence. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer as to how to obtain that yet..
