I am in eight grade and I am in a percussion class. We have a huge recital coming up, and my band teacher each assignes us a part depending on how good we are. He assigned us a part in three different groups, and decides which group words the best. In the first group, my best friend Spencer, has the biggest part, the snare (drum) and in the second group, I had the snare.
In class the other day, Spencer came fourty minuets late because he had been taking a test in his previous class. Since he was better at snare and wasnt at class, my teacher had me play snare. I did it so well he had me play it at the next rehersal. Spencer had his heart sent on playing this part that when he found out at the rehersal he was extremely close to tears. I have a personatly that makes me extremely guilty about everything, so I had a hard time sleeping and stuff.
The next day in class, after I had talked to Mr. Earl about the situation, he talked to the class abaout how sometimes he has to choose only one person between two best friends. Spencer smiled at me, and he was really happy when I told him I told Mr. Earl to give him the part. Spencer told me that he wanted me to keep it, I think he was just touched that I would be willing to do that.
He was fine for the rest of the day, untill after school. Whenever we see eachother we go "You're my best friend!" so I did so, and he hesitates then goes- "don't call me that." then walked away.
I am extremely hurt and Im scared to face him. How do I make this right?? Please help me!

You did not do anything wrong; you actually behaved very maturely, you were willing to give up your spot for your friend. That shows what kind of person you are. It is a shame that Spencer could not act with the same grace. I would talk to him about the incident. Hear him out. But in my opinion, he is a little selfish and isn't a good friend. "A good friend would have been happy for you from the very beginning.

after the recital he will forget all about it. in the mean time give him some space but just straight up ask him why hes upset with you. being direct will really help get your questions answered

Sounds like he is just being a big baby, give him some space and don't coddle him.
