What are the concers people face as they care for their elderly parents?

How hard is it for people to take care fo their elderly parents what do they have to do to take care of them.

I help take care of my parents, my father has diabeties2 and my mom don't drive. I've also helped take care of my grandparents befor the passed away. The only concern is how will I handle it if they pass away. I eenjoy being there for my parents. I take them to the store and doc appointments. I help with there daily things when needed.

Without knowing the people involved it's difficult to say but it really depends on the health of the parents. The main concerns are increased dependency, decreased mobility and impending mortality. Are they suffering pain or discomfort? What quality of life do they enjoy and how can it be improved? When and how will the first parent die? How will the surviving parent cope? What quality of life do they enjoy? How do you keep them motivated to stay independent and maintain interests outside the home? Can they take care of toileting? Can they get in and out of the bath? What would happen if they fell or had an accident? And so on.

that depends on the elderly parent. is the parent amublatory? is s/he bedridden? can s/he be left alone at all? if the caregiver works, can the parent be left with no one to supervise? or to buy groceries or any other errands? does the parent have a medical condition that requires constant attention? can they use stairs or do they need a ground floor bedroom? how will the elderly parent affect the dynamics of the rest of the family? are there children or a spouse that need attention or that resent the elderly parent?

Human species is such a dirty creation by the biology in the global system ,it is not at all tolerable when it is too young or too old to take care of themselves to maintain basic cleanliness and hygiene.

It becomes tolerable with a child on seeing it's charming face and it is intilerable in the case of very old people ,especially when they can't manage their basic needs (bath,wash etc),apart from financial strain on most of the underprevileged families.

It is a very good question but even the so called ,non existent God can not solve the problem of very old people.

If the so called God has been responsible in creating humans,he would have designed humans with less nuisance value at very old age.

Birth and death are painful but the pain of very old age is intolerable to the old person as well as to his near and dear.

Don't remind about the horror of old age beyond 80 or 90 yrs, with poor health.

You need speak to a professional about this. Depending on the condition of your parent, it could be very easy to very difficult. You could have an in house nurse to help you out for the first few months until you get the hang of it, but again, do consult a professional about your options to ensure your parents get the best care possible, whether it be from you or otherwise.

That really depends on whether your parents have any illnesses or whether they are incompetant or not. If they can't do anything for themselves it will be like caring for a baby unless you hire a nurse. Some of us were blessed enough to have parents that took care of us growing up so why not do it for them. It is a huge responsibility.If you love your parents it shouldn't even be a question.

Money

Dr, medications, hospital stays can be very very expensive. My 88 year old mother fell and ended up spending a month in the hospital + 2 weeks in a rehab facility, total cost just under $500K. Why so long - bad reactions to medications and difficulty treating old broken bones. Elderly people get to a point where they aren't able to take care of themselves. You either need to be with them 100% of the time or they need to go into a skilled nursing facility - which costs $10K and up per month. In order to pay for the skilled nursing facility the parents end up having to liquidate all their assets. As a child you feel guilty that you can't take care of them yourself (they took care of you once) and the guilt that everything they worked for will be gone and not passed down to their children/grandchildren.



It also hurts to see your parents not be able to do things they used to do, like not keep the house clean, drive the car, go out to a restaurant, go to church .....



My mother has both Alzheimer's and osteoporosis. She wears depends, can't remember my name from one minute to the next, can't stand for long due to pain, can't do anything other than go from bed to the kitchen table and back. Eyesight is so bad she can't even see the TV to watch it, can't see to read. Because of the osteoporosis she is in so much pain she is only comfortable laying flat on her back in bed. My father takes care of her now, but at some point he may no longer be able to do that. They live in Colorado, I live in New England, oner brother lives in Alaska and one brother lives near them - but works 40+ hours a week.



My advise to you, live hard, play hard, die young. You don't want to get old - it isn't all it's cracked up to be.

First of all, I do not suppose it is reasonable to lump one race into a class. No one man or woman units the tone for the whole lot that a race does. To the individuals that published retaliatory feedback, it makes you no larger. Not all white individuals placed their mother and father in nursing houses to any extent further than blacks no longer caring for their youngsters. I am a married black feminine with 2 lovely youngsters. My daughter is, and continually has been, at the honor roll. My son is three and is much above different youngsters his age, and will learn. So please do not say that every one "black individuals" have no idea their kid's fathers and do not care for their youngsters. Our loved ones appears at our grandmother with nice admire and love. Our grandmother is slowly death of melanoma, and my mom moved her into her residence and we now take turns caring for her. Trust me, we had greater than sufficient cash to position her right into a nursing residence, however that wasn't even an choice in our loved ones.
